The Quiet Little Clam is a children’s picture book about a character with selective mutism. M is happy as a clam until the first day of school. It is a story that children can read themselves, a parent can read to a child, or a teacher can read to a class. Selective mutism is an anxiety disorder where a child is unable to speak in certain situations. The disorder is not well-known and there are very few children’s books on the subject. Through the power of storytelling, the goal of this book is to help children understand the disorder and to educate readers on some of the methods used to encourage talking. Author Kathleen Hong is a former teacher and a parent of a child who has overcome selective mutism.
